MFL (French) at St Patrick’s CofE Primary Academy Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
‘A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.’ (“National Curriculum in England: Languages Programmes of Study”,KS2 DofE, 2013).
At St Patrick’s, we aim to develop a culture where children learn to grow their own voice with joy and purpose. Through language learning, pupils get to access different experiences and gain perspective.
Learning a foreign language also helps students develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, on which there is a particular emphasis in the Programme of Study for English in KS2. Through interactive learning experience, pupils develop communication strategies that can be applied to everyday lives, not just when speaking a foreign language.
Moreover, not only does studying a foreign language give our students opportunities for cross-curriculum learning (numeracy, geography, history, practical communication…) but it allows them to shine through our Magnificent Values, exercising respect, kindness, and learning with enjoyment.
Implementation
St Patrick’s intends to use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to ensure pupils are offered an ambitious and curriculum-aligned experience that will benefit all students.
Children are taught a 30-minute session every week through - but not limited to - drama, singing, games or kinaesthetic activities that make language learning accessible and exciting.
Lessons will cover the 5 language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening and interacting) as per the DofE and Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and include cultural input. Lessons provide pupils with opportunities to revisit and practice language covered previously and introduce new language or concepts. Progress will be reviewed regularly.
Across our curriculum, you can expect your children to learn about an array of grammatical concepts along with vocabulary and language such as:

- - School subjects,
- - Animals,
- - At home,
- - Numeracy, cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers,
- - Clothing,
- - Daily routine,
- - Days of the week, months, seasons
- - Family,
- - Food and drink,
- - Greetings and praise,
- - Parts of the body,
- - Sports, hobbies
- - Telling the time,
- - Transport,
- - In town (building, shops, public areas)
- - Weather …
In addition, we will look for opportunities to increase cultural awareness and celebrate events and traditions of French-speaking countries.
Impact
Children will be assessed throughout the year to ensure progress is made by all.
Through regular contact with high-quality sources and materials, the visible impact will be students’ ability:
- - to speak with each other in French,
- - to grow in their knowledge on the structures and sounds of the language,
- - to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills,
- - to be well prepared to transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully.
But beyond these assessments, we expect to see each child become a competent, proud and confident learner.
